August 2026 – The Asia Institute is excited to announce the launch of The Kyoto Center, a comprehensive hub for global learning in Japan. The Kyoto Center offers academic programming in the fall, spring and summer terms, along with Japanese language programs and work-study internships, providing students with a menu of exciting and engaging learning opportunities.
Growing Interest in Study Abroad in Japan
Over the past several years, Japan has seen a significant surge in interest from international students seeking both short-term visits and longer academic programs. IIE’s Open Doors data notes that in the 2023-24 academic year, over 11,000 students attending American universities traveled to Japan to study abroad. Since then, it is estimated that this number has continued to grow annually by 10 percent or more.
Academic Programs and Student Support
The Kyoto Center was established following Pepperdine University’s selection of The Asia Institute to support the development of Seaver College’s international programs in Kyoto. Run in parallel, The Kyoto Center’s open enrollment programs incorporate established student-focused housing facilities, a unique Japanese classroom and meeting space environment, a dedicated team of education professionals to support students, as well as an approach to award-winning academic programming customization and flexibility that The Asia Institute is known for.

We are beyond excited to open The Kyoto Center, the second Asia Institute established and accredited academic center, in conjunction with our globally recognized institutional partners. The Kyoto Center builds on our deep in-country knowledge and experience, integrating the four key pillars of society, education, industry, not-for-profit organizations and the public sector, all with a goal to support the educational development of the next generation of leaders.”
